A common myth about traveling to Palau is that it's extremely expensive. Here are
a few tips to get the best deals on airfare to Palau
For best fares to Palau try to avoid the Guam route that Continental offers, it is the
most expensive connection for the most part! There are a few exceptions, sometimes Continental offers great deals from their main hub in Houston, we often hear of fares in the range of $1100 R/T from Houston to Koror! just keep your eyes open for the deals.
One of the cheapest connections is also Tokyo, from the mainland U.S. you can often find fares for around $500 or even less for R/T, from Tokyo its about $900 R/T to Koror!
Now there is another new connection available, China Airlines has just lanched their inaugural flight between Taipei Taiwan and Koror Palau. For now there will be three weekly charter flights operated by China Airlines but they are working on establishing a regular route between Taiwan and Palau within a few months. If this works out then it should definitely offer lower fare possibilities to travelers from around the world as China Airlines has connections to many US cities as well as Europe and Asia. Soon it may be possible to fly from the US to Palau for under $1000 R/T.
The key: is flexibility in your travel dates and letting your airfare decide your exact dates and not making plans for certain days and then finding out that the fare is outrageous! Find out what is the cheapest fare in a given time period first, then make your arrangements.
Otherwise you may find yourself being quoted an airfare of $3500! R/T just because your dates are set, why loose all that money that you could spend on wonderful art and souvenirs from Palau. Or you might as well upgrade to first class!
*Using your miles
You can really save big if you use Continental One Pass miles that you may already have.
Typically you only need 25,000 miles to get a free R/T ticket between Palau and several airports in the Asia Pacific region. Tokyo, Nagoya, Manila, Bangkok, Bali, Guam, Hong Kong, And Cairns Australia are all within this region and if you find a great deal to any one of those ariports you can connect to your free flight using your Continental ONE PASS. I personally like to use the Tokyo connection, I often find fares to Tokyo for around $600 and then I use my miles to get to Palau through Guam. Usually if I fly on Continental and or Northwest I earn back the miles in just one trip! if going to the mainland U.S.
